Polly's medieval flags illustrate Somerset’s history and folklore, and its ecological and environmental significance. From the ancient Celts practicing Ophiolatreia in 500 BC to the Somerset County Council symbol forming in 1958, the serpent remains constant throughout the county. Today Somerset’s Mendip Hills are home to the rare adder, and although this snake species is on the verge of extinction across the UK, it remains strong in Somerset.

“Ochre shows how our brains were developing, and that we were using our environment. It bridges the divide between art and science.” Tammy Hodgskiss
