Join environmental artist and pigment maker Polly Bennett in a pigment & mark-making workshop looking at ochres foraged around the UK.

Learn how to wash earth, produce pigment, and experiment with different binders - including gum arabic and egg yolk - to see how your paint is altered. You will leave with watercolour paints, pigment, paintings and new environmentally-friendly skills to incorporate into your art practice.

Explore the endless colours iron oxide produces and honour our ancestors by painting works on paper with one of our oldest types of pigment.

Please bring two standard sized, glass jam jars with lids and an apron. You are welcome to bring preferred paper and paintbrushes but I will also provide these. Everything else is included.

This workshop is held at artist Lucy Homer Jones' studio while it is open for South East Open Studios (SEOS). Make a day of it by playing with ochres and visiting Lucy's studio and beautiful exhibition curated for SEOS.

“Ochre shows how our brains were developing, and that we were using our environment. It bridges the divide between art and science.” Tammy Hodgskiss
